PPWR 2026: the regulatory framework is evolving. Ecopack is already prepared for PFAS compliance!

The food packaging industry is undergoing a profound transformation. The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is charting a clear path toward greater sustainability, pushing companies across the entire supply chain to rethink their products from a circular economy perspective.

What is the PPWR?

The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is the new European regulatory framework set to reshape the packaging industry over the coming years. Rather than being a single regulation with one fixed deadline, the PPWR introduces a series of requirements, targets, and measures that will be implemented progressively through to 2040, with the goal of making packaging increasingly sustainable, safe, and circular.

It is important to note that not all provisions will apply to every company in the sector. Some requirements will concern specific materials, such as paper, plastic, or aluminum, while others will apply only to particular packaging formats or applications. For this reason, compliance with the PPWR does not mean adapting to every new rule indiscriminately, but rather understanding which requirements are relevant to a company’s products and processes. In a regulatory landscape that is still evolving, continuously monitoring updates and future implementing measures will be essential for planning investments and managing the transition effectively.

For those operating in the B2B sector, acting early is not only an ethical choice but also a strategic move to ensure business stability and continuity. At Ecopack, a global partner in the production of baking molds and paper baking cups, we have always worked to turn future regulatory requirements, such as the PPWR, into concrete competitive advantages for our customers.

PPWR and PFAS-Free: an already established certainty

Consumer health and the safety of food-contact materials are at the heart of the new European safeguards introduced under the PPWR framework. Among the key regulatory measures already defined is the restriction on the use of PFAS substances in food packaging, which is set to take effect on August 12, 2026.

In response to this evolving regulatory landscape, Ecopack has chosen to act ahead of the deadline: our entire range of baking molds is already 100% PFAS-Free today. By choosing PFAS-Free solutions now, manufacturers, industrial customers, and retailers can reduce regulatory risk, ensure supply chain continuity, and offer end consumers packaging solutions that are aligned with both current market expectations and future compliance requirements.

What will change for industrial businesses?

Packaging in contact with food must not be placed on the market if it contains PFAS above the following limits:
โ€บ 25 ppb for each individual PFAS (targeted analysis, polymeric PFAS are excluded);
โ€บ 250 ppb for the sum of all PFAS (targeted analysis, other methodologies possible; polymeric PFAS are excluded);
โ€บ 50 ppm for PFAS (including polymeric PFAS); if the total fluorine content exceeds 50 mg/kg, additional evidence must be provided upon request.

Europe is calling for packaging that does not become a burden on the planet, encouraging recycling and composting while imposing strict limits on single-use plastics. Ecopackโ€™s response lies in the very nature of its products. We useย FSCยฎ-certified paperย and offer product lines withย CEPI (4evergreen) recyclability certificationย andย TรœV Austria compostability certification, supporting European sustainability and circular economy objectives.

A global partner to navigate change

In a market where regulations are evolving rapidly, Ecopack goes beyond supplying products by positioning itself as a strategic and proactive partner. We continuously monitor developments in European legislation to ensure that the transition toward more sustainable packaging is a smooth, safe, and predictable journey for our customers.

It is also essential to rely on official sources and stay informed about regulatory developments, as certain deadlines, implementation measures, and technical requirements may be further clarified or updated over time.

Ultimately, innovating packaging is not only about meeting regulatory requirementsโ€”it is about protecting the future of your brand and strengthening its competitiveness in the global marketplace.
